Galaxy Faith & Family Night

IMG_2606.JPGSo on Saturday, we took the Bishop First United Methodist youth group & friends down to Los Angeles to watch the LA Galaxy take on the Colorado Rapids. This was a bit of a grudge match, since Colorado spanked the Galaxy in the season opener, 4-0. But this time was different. It was an exciting game, with David Beckham making some great through-passes, perfect crosses, and amazing free kicks to give LA the edge. They were leading at half 3-0 over the Rapids. But the Galaxy very nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Two late goals from Colorado gave the game a desperate tone by the end. LA was just clearing any ball in their end, and passing was nonexistent. But, they held on to win. There was also excitement in other ways. Two red cards were issued. When Colorado captain Facundo Erpen was clearly stomped by LA Galaxy striker Alan Gordon, he got the straight red card. But after a short delay, the replay was shown on the Jumbotron, and it very clearly showed Erpen making a deliberate kick to Gordon’s groin! So Erpen got the straight red card, too. They both made the walk of shame past the LA Riot Squad fans, who gave ‘em both the business.

And finally, a “love struck” male fan ran onto the field in stoppage time, and gave David Beckham a high-five and a hug before he was kicked by Galaxy teammate Chris Klein, and got hauled off by security.

Everyone had a great time, and I’m looking forward to the next time we take in a Major League Soccer match.

Capital Classic Soccer Tournament

2008 Bishop U11 Boys - Capital Classic U12 champions!

The Bishop U11 boys team won their division at the recent Capital Classic soccer tournament in Carson City, Nevada this past weekend. Joey scored twice in the opening game against South Valley United in a 3-1 win. The team beat the Smashing Pumpkins, a club team from Reno, and then went on to beat the Carson City Blue Demons on Sunday. The final was against the 2nd place points winners, the Carson Blue Demons, so we played them twice. We also beat them twice! And this was the U11 boys playing against all U12 teams. As a coach and parent, I couldn’t be more proud of how we played. It was beautiful soccer, and these boys really played as a team. Anyway, the photo links to the gallery of pics from the tournament, so enjoy!
